What to see in Favignana?

During the boat excursion you will have the chance to visit the small village of Favignana, and to make the most of your stop, here are the must-see attractions during your trip.

Arriving at the island’s small harbour, you will first be struck by the architectural beauty of this place, which evokes the life of the sea, the fishermen — and you can see how locals have strived to keep this character unchanged over time.

Just a few steps from your landing point, you can venture into the heart of the island: the historic centre, where you will find several bars and restaurants for a quick bite and a taste of local traditional food, from pasta with sea urchin to sardines or an excellent fish couscous. You can browse through shops and pick up pieces of local craftsmanship, and find all the essential services such as a pharmacy, supermarkets and a bank.

You can then head towards Villa Florio, the imposing historic mansion that once served as the residence of the noble Florio family, who brought Favignana to its golden age. From the very beginning, this building became the drawing room of Favignana, where Ignazio Florio Jr and Donna Franca would invite their friends during the long-awaited mattanza season, watching the spectacle from their terrace amid celebrations and banquets.

Today the building is owned by the Municipality and houses the Town Council, the Municipal Library, an antiquarium with a wonderful shell collection, and a handy tourist information point.

After visiting this wonderful villa, during the break on our Favignana excursion, we recommend heading to the former Florio Tuna Factory, an unmissable stop for anyone who wants to discover the true essence of Favignana and its history. It is also widely regarded as a relic of industrial archaeology.

The beauty of this factory — once used to store anchors, the mattanza boats and equipment — lies precisely in the role it played in the economic growth of this small island. It shows how the lives of this noble family and the island’s inhabitants became intertwined over time, achieving genuine social redemption and a real chance to overcome poverty.

When the Florios purchased the Island of Favignana and the Formica Islet, they breathed new life into them, turning this factory into a true jewel in the crown and one of the most flourishing industries for processing and preserving tuna — becoming the first in Italy to can tuna in the form we know today.

A true gem not to be missed during your visit to the island.
