What to see in Favignana?
During the boat excursion, you will have the opportunity to visit the charming village of Favignana. To help you make the most of your stop, here are some must-see attractions during your visit.
Upon arriving at the island’s harbor, you will first admire the architectural beauty of this place, which reflects its maritime heritage and the life of local fishermen. You can clearly see how this authentic character has been preserved over time.
Just a short walk from the port, you can explore the heart of the island, the historic center, where you will find several bars and restaurants perfect for a quick meal and for tasting local specialties such as sea urchin pasta, our traditional sardines, or a delicious plate of fish cous cous. You can also browse through shops, purchase local handicrafts, and find all the essential services such as pharmacies, supermarkets, and banks.
You can then head towards Villa Florio, the impressive historic residence that once belonged to the noble Florio family, who brought prosperity to Favignana. From the time it was built, the villa became the social hub of the island, where Ignazio Florio Jr. and Donna Franca hosted their guests during the much-anticipated mattanza (traditional tuna fishing season), watching the event from their terrace while organizing parties and banquets.
Today, the villa is owned by the municipality and houses the Town Council, the municipal library, an antiquarium featuring a beautiful collection of seashells, and a convenient tourist information point.
After visiting this stunning villa, during the break in our Favignana excursion, we recommend heading to the former Florio Tuna Factory, a must-see for anyone who wants to discover the true essence and history of Favignana. It is also considered an important example of industrial archaeology.
The beauty of this facility—once used to store anchors, mattanza boats, and equipment—lies in the crucial role it played in the island’s economic growth. It tells the story of how the lives of the Florio family and the island’s inhabitants became intertwined over time, leading to social progress and offering real opportunities to overcome poverty.
When the Florio family acquired the Island of Favignana and the islet of Formica, they brought new life to the area, transforming this factory into a true flagship of excellence and one of the most thriving tuna processing industries, becoming the first in Italy to can tuna as we know it today.
A true gem not to be missed during your visit to the island.
